Good Company

Dear Friend,

It is okay to feel whatever it is you are feeling. You don’t have to be anything. You don’t have to be fixed or better. We are all a bit broken; we all hurt and heal and hurt again. You don’t have to feel bad for feeling bad.

You can be grateful for this pain. You can allow it in, sink into it like a deep bathtub bringing water up to your chin. You can breathe careful, shallow breaths until the heat cools and it is time to move on to something else.

This wound does not define you. It only marks you. It is what allows you to expand in all directions, stretching until you almost burst during the happier times. This pain is what reflects light when the sun shines on your weary face.

We all have our pain, child. We all have our torn edges and holes poked clean through. But fill those holes with love and those who love you. You don’t have to be whole, darling. You just have to be in good company.

Love,

Katie
